Anton Bilchik Explains the 3-Step Pain Relief Ladder

Anton Bilchik works hard to relieve pain and other symptoms in the patients he treats, performing surgery and other life-saving measures to reduce or remove cancer. Even with these advanced procedures, many cancer patients suffer pain. In his quest to provide maximum patient comfort, as well as optimal surgical outcomes, Dr. Bilchik adheres to the World Health Organization’s 3-step analgesia ladder that outlines the procedure for pain relief in adults with cancer.

If pain occurs, Anton Bilchik promptly administers oral medications in the order listed. First, he suggests aspirin or acetaminophen, sometimes called paracetamol. These medications are non-opioids; that is, they are not made from derivatives of codeine or morphine. Non-opioids do not cause physical dependence and are relatively free from side effects.

Anton Bilchik MD may recommend mild opioids if aspirin or acetaminophen do not relieve your pain. Codeine and hydrocodone are examples of mild opioids. Dr. Bilchik recommends you take these drugs every three to six hours, rather than as-needed, to maintain a pain-free state.

As the third step, Dr. Bilchik may prescribe strong opioids, such as morphine or fentanyl lozenges, for severe pain. These drugs are very potent and reserved for only the most severe pain. Anton Bilchik may also prescribe “adjuvants” medications to calm fear and anxiety.

The World Health Organization and Anton Bilchik recommend a two-step ladder to keep children with cancer more comfortable. Contact Dr. Bilchik to learn more information about controlling cancer pain.
