How to Maintain a Healthy Diet during Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment can affect your appetite and the way that your body processes foods. It is important to maintain proper nutrition throughout your treatment so that you have the nutrients you need to fight the cancer. There are certain considerations that should be made throughout your treatment, and Anton Bilchik M.D. can help you choose the right diet for your personal needs.

Eating after Surgery

After surgery, you will need protein and calories to help prevent fatigue and promote healing. In the day or so immediately after your surgery you may not be able to eat solid foods. Fish can help deliver the protein you need, and juices will give you extra vitamins while keeping you hydrated. Yogurt is also easy on your system, and it helps to boost your immunity. Foods that can cause gas should be avoided, as this can cause extra discomfort while you are recovering.

Eating and Chemotherapy

You should make sure that you eat before undergoing chemotherapy. You may also want to pack a light snack, as some treatments can take a few hours. Throughout the chemo process, you will want to make sure that you stay hydrated, so be sure to drink plenty of water. Small meals throughout the day may be easier for you to handle instead of three large ones. Greasy foods can be more difficult to handle when you are going through chemotherapy, so keep your foods light.

Anton Bilchik M.D. can help you come up with a meal plan that is easy for you to manage throughout your treatment plan. Your body still needs nutrients, so make sure that you incorporate a healthy diet into your cancer treatment. Follow Dr. Bilchik’s blog for more information about cancer news.
