Research Shows ESD Can Help Treat Barrett’s Neoplasia

Barretts Esophagus

During a recent email interview with Reuters Health, Dr. Anton Bilchik provided his insight into a recent study that tested whether or not endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) could be used as an effective treatment for resecting early Barrett’s neoplasia. He commented,

“This study is one of the largest reported and demonstrates that in the hands of experienced endoscopists, it can be done safely with few adverse events reported…”

The study Dr. Anton Bilchik mentioned was performed by Drs. Sharmila Subramaniam and Pradeep Bhandari of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, UK and was conducted between 2008 to 2016 involving 124 patients. Despite the potential of the procedure derived from the research, Dr. Anton Bilchik also commented,

“However, curative resection was only accomplished in 65.8% of patients and negative margins were only achieved in 79%.”
